Sunflower seed Allergy : Cross-reactivity with Mugwort Pollen

Abstract
Sunflower belonging to Composite familyallergy is not common. We report a case of allergic rhinitis patients with airway hyperresponsiveness to methacholine sensized to mugwort and ragweed pollen, who developed urticaria, angioedema and allergic
rhinitis symptoms immediately after the ingestion of sunflower seed. She showed positive responses to sunflower seed extracts as well as mugwort and ragweed. RAST revealed class 4 to mugword and class 1 to ragweed. Bronchoprovocation test with
sunflower
seed extract revealed a negative results. Nasal provocation test with sunflower seed extracts results in sneezing, rhinorrhea followed by nasal abstruction. Mugwort=RAST inhibition test showed significant inhibitions with addition of mugwort
extracts.
When the sunflower seed extracts were added, partial inhibition upto 41% were noted.
It is suggested that ingestion of sunflower seed extracts can induce allergic symptoms in a patients can induce allergic symptoms in a patient with previously sensitized to mugwort pollens, which might be caused by crossreactivity between
sunflower
seed
and mugwort pollens.
